It is only recently that I have taken on a workspace at Gaolyard Studios. I moved to Cornwall in February last year after spending some time in Thailand travelling. I graduated from Decorative Arts in 1999 at Nottingham Trent University. This course gave me the rare opportunity to creatively experiment in various mediums of which I specialised in my final year in kiln worked cast glass.
My work comes from my fascination with simple 3-dimensional and relief geometry and placing it as repetitive pattern. With glass I get the luxury of the transparent depth, how the light refracts and the reflection as a result of surface pattern and transparency. My exploration is this depth, within it the fluidity and yet its stolen movement. This is my reason for choosing this medium, as glass has these perfect properties. I love the cold, solid tactility and its fragile nature. My time here at the studio is to further research the effects I can produce in the kiln using different glass and combining colours.
My enquiry goes further into other kiln-firing effects with glass, which include fusing and slumping. I am working on producing glass panels – simple hanging gifts using bold and textural designs within fused pieces of sheet glass. |
