+ Biography
Nancy Main started working at the Gaolyard Studios in 1999. Prior to that she had spent 3 years potting at evening classes and 6 months working in the Nelson pottery in New Zealand. The pots shown here are all examples of her earlier work - burnished and carved pots which were smoke fired. Her current work, however, is quite different. She now works in porcelain and achieves her decorative effects with glazes.
"My work has recently developed in a new direction. After becoming frustrated with the limitations of smoke firing I began to experiment with different clays and glazes. From this experimentation emerged my current range of hand thrown porcelain teapots, teabowls, beakers, jugs and vases.
I am attracted to the appeal of strong clear forms which feel delicate and sensual. The use of such pieces in daily life for simple pleasures adds an essence of the special and sacred in to our daily lives." |
