+ Biography
Born in Reading in 1970, Rebecca Harvey grew up in Cambridge. She studied Art & 3D Design at Cardiff College of Art and Design, where she specialised in ceramics, with a particular interest in soda glaze ware. Harvey was awarded a Crafts Council Setting-Up Grant and established her studio in Cambridge in 1996. She became a professional member of the Crafts Potters Association in 1998 and a selected maker of the Crafts Council in 2002. In 2005 Harvey was awarded a grant from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust to pursue a Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art, which she gained in 2007. In 2008 she moved down to Cornwall and joined the Gaolyard Studios. Inspired by Japanese ceramics, eighteenth-century cream ware and twentieth-century enamels, Harvey’s work has been exhibited widely, and has been featured in selected exhibitions, and is in public and private collections in Britain and abroad. Fascinated by the quality of different materials, Harvey has recently started to work in porcelain. The collection of porcelain and glass tableware featured in this exhibition represents an exploration of the relationships that develop between objects as they are arranged and utilised. Contrasts in texture and densities of materials create opportunities for unexpected harmonies or delightful incongruities that reveal themselves when different pieces are displayed together or used at table. By encouraging creativity and experimentation in this way, the collection allows the user to explore their own relationship with the individual pieces – a dialogue through use.
