+ Biography
Alluding to classical form but with contemporary design appeal, Rick's
wireneck vases are available in either a black or white glaze and
utilise both fine and coarse stoneware clays, which thrown and turned,
reveal a textured surface quality for the black pots and a silky smooth
finish for the white ones.
Stainless steel wire collars fashioned onto the vases post-firing
contrast with both types of vase combining with their round shapes and
clean lines to produce a striking visual impact. Each item is
individually made, no two pieces are alike. Experience of silver
jewellery-making encouraged the impulse to mix materials, this has
gradually developed into the present body of work.
Background: In earlier years Rick made a living from antique
restoration and garden design, training later in therapeutic massage. He
obtained BA (Hons) degree in Ceramics from the University of
Westminster, Harrow 1993-96 and until recently has been making and
selling ceramics from his studio at the Chocolate Factory in Hackney,
North London. He now lives in Cornwall where he shares workspace at
Gaolyard Studios in St. Ives. Is a member of the Craft Potters
Association and Cornwall Crafts Association.
